Gary Rizzolo si sente come a casa a Bassano del Grappa. Il suo nonno era di qui, Gary è nato in Tasmania ma da bambino è sempre venuto a Bassano per l’estate.
Negli ultimi anni è tornato in Veneto ogni anno per lavorare a Verona. Gary è un insegnante che ama la musica e si è innamorato del suo lavoro in un work shop d’artigiani del legno. Ha visto un’occasione per combinare i suoi interessi.
– Ho detto al mio insegnante che volevo costruire una chitarra, e lui mi ha risposto “Uh..?”
Gary sorride e continua come se fosse ovvio: “Quindi, ho costruito la mia prima chitarra”.
– Oggi, cercando su YouTube, chiunque ti può spiegare come si fa. Io avevo due o tre libri.
La prima richiesta che ha avuto era per una chitarra con sette corde, e lui doveva progettarla da solo.
– Ed è continuato così, non ho mai avuto una richiesta per una chitarra “normale”:
A te piacerebbe farlo?
Sorride: “No, mi piace la sfida.”
Di sicuro non si fa una chitarra in un giorno, è un lavoro artistico, non deve solo suonare bene ma anche essere comoda da suonare ed essere bella.
– È come costruire una scatola, e, poi, la fai suonare.
Mostra delle foto della ultima chitarra che ha costruito. Un legno chiaro, quasi bianco, che, però, si chiama “Legno nero della Tasmania” perché le dita diventano nere dopo di averlo toccato, come con un metallo.
Dopo qualche anno Gary ha cominciato a riparare chitarre e ha imparato tante cose osservando gli errori degli altri.
Ormai è tornato al suo work shop Rizzolo Guitars a Melbourne, in Australia e noi speriamo di rivederlo all’Ostello Bassano del Grappa l’anno prossimo.

Gary Rizzolo feels at home in Bassano del Grappa. His grandfather was from here, himself though was born in Tasmania but spent the summers in Bassano.
The last years he returns to Veneto every year to work in Verona. Gary is a music interested teacher, who fell in love with the job in a wood work shop. And he saw a opportunity to combine his interests.
– I said to my lecture I’d like to build a guitar, he was like “Uh..?”
Gary smiles big and continues like it was obvious:
– So I built my first guitar. Nowadays you can search on Youtube and anyone shows you how to do. Back then I had two or three books.
The first order he got was for a seven stringed guitar, so he had to design it himself.
– And that kept happening, I’ve never done a “normal” guitar.
But would you like to do that?
He smiles:
– No. I like the challenge.
For sure building a guitar is not something that’s been done in one day. It’s an artistic job, apart from sounding good, they have to be comfortable to play and to look good.
– It’s like to build a box. Then you make it play.
He’s showing some photos of the last guitar he made. In light, almost white, wood. But the name is Tasmanian blackwood because the fingers get dark after touching it, like with metal.
After some years of building guitars he took a break and started to repair guitars and by seeing the mistakes he developed his skills.
Nowadays you find him back building in his work shop Rizzolo Guitars in Melbourne, Australia. And next year, if not before, we hope to see him back here in Ostello Bassano del Grappa.
